Soil Planning For Forestry
The UK policy is to expand tree cover for commercial timber production
and countryside diversification (increased public access, recreation,
and wildlife habitat creation).
Strategic initiatives include Community Forests, county-wide indicative
forestry plans, and the publication of a Forest Strategy for England
by the Forestry Commission. These identify priorities for tree planting.
Successful tree planting depends on the selection of suitable sites
and matching tree species to site conditions. Soil Planning carries
out site specific land capability surveys, using a classification
developed by the Forestry Commission for use in England Scotland and
Wales. This is also an effective basis to the estimation of yield
classes and windthrow hazard for sound investment decisions.
Government support for tree planting is particularly strong where
the economic regeneration of derelict areas is dependent upon environmental
improvements. Grant aid is targeted in these areas, but natural and
undisturbed soils are frequently absent. Soil Planning can identify
the most suitable soil-forming materials available, and advise on
soil handling and cultivation to create favourable soil profiles and
enhance propects for successful tree planting.
